Regenerative farming in practice

The day will start at the Dózsa György Hungarian Cultural Centre in Bajmok (Southern Region, Serbia), registration is from 9:30-10:00, and at 10:00 we will introduce the TMG association and the theoretical and ideological foundations of regenerative farming.

Then, in a round table discussion with members of the association, they will hear about the transition to the regenerative path, the beginning of the journey, the possible pitfalls and how to overcome them.

Lunch will be served from noon (12:00-13:00), consisting of roast lamb and pork prepared according to Balkan tradition.

After lunch we move to the border and continue the field training on the estate of Flórián Farkas. Flórián is both host and instructor for the whole day.

Participants can learn simple techniques:

  • how to handle the host stick to get an idea of the compactness of the soil,
  • an equally simple way to see how water is absorbed by three different types of land. The one that has been ploughed for six years, the one that was converted a year ago and the one next door, which is still being ploughed.

The next programme will be a demonstration of blanket plant terminals:

  • will be a Zetor, a 40-year-old Ferguson and a mash-up MTZ, and their respective implements, which will not come close to the price of a very expensive tractor. The point of our presentation is that you don't need a terribly expensive machine park for this type of cultivation.

We will also look at the function and effect of cover crops and see them in action.

Also on the afternoon menu will be maize sowing at two locations in a no-till and a strip-till area, where a simple mid-range Turkish drill will be seen at work in variously terminated strips. For non-believers, scraping the soil is a must: whether there is a two-inch grain of maize or not.

Next up is a tour of a barley field, sown in the autumn with a Rad seed drill. We'll also have soil analysis and leaf sampling data, as well as a report on the inputs used, and you can even view these materials on site.

Finally, you can see a rapeseed sown in a wheat field.

It will be a long, busy day, so please be punctual and patient as the experience will be shared in two languages: there will be Hungarian and Serbian participants.

12:00 – 13:00

Lunch

One part of the event will be the opening of a soil section with Endre Dobos, during which he will talk in detail about soil degradation, its defects and how to improve it. He will also show how the absence of tilling and the presence of permanent living root systems can help improve soil conditions.

13:00 – 15:30

Site visit

  • Comparison of soil conditions: 5 years TMMG technology & classical technology.
  • Termination of cover crops in 4 ways.
  • Sowing maize in NO-TILL and STRIP-TILL.

The event will be video, audio and video recorded.

Get to know
the host

Flórián Farkas is a qualified agricultural engineer, crop consultant and member of the TMG Association almost from the beginning. He farms 25 hectares with his father and son on a part-time basis, on the border of Bajmok in the south of Hungary, in the Telečka Gorge, a few kilometres from the Serbian-Hungarian border.

The soil is medium-quality chalky chernozem, the climate is dry, with average annual rainfall of 630 mm. Maize, sunflower, wheat, barley, rape and soya are grown.

They have not ploughed since 2008, between 2008 and 2017 they were using grassland and strip cropping, since 2018 all their plots are in a regenerative system (no-till, cover crops, crop rotation).

Primarily for farmers. Participation is limited and preference will be given to farmers when applying.

The afternoon field session will be held indoors in the main hall of the Cultural Centre, with theoretical instruction and visuals.

The day is very busy, unfortunately we can't wait for anyone. We ask everyone to leave plenty of time to cross the border and read the useful information on border crossings. When planning your return journey, please also take into account the opening hours of the border crossing points.

There could be several reasons. You may not have entered your email address correctly when registering. Alternatively, since it's a human being sending the feedback, rather than an automated system, it may take some time for the confirmation message to arrive. For example, if you register in the evening, at night or at dawn, you can expect to receive a reply in the morning. But if you get stuck anywhere in the process or are in doubt about anything, call the number provided during the day.

Lunch is optional: roast pork or roast lamb! Lunch will be provided in an organised setting for all participants, i.e. there will be information boards at the venue indicating the place, method and time of lunch! Seating for lunch will be limited!

Lunch is optional and can include lamb or mala roast and the accompanying side dish! Unfortunately we cannot cater for individual requests due to lack of capacity. In case of special requests, please make your own lunch arrangements!
