While the corn was withering and drying up across the country during the June heat wave, Attila Szeredi<\/a>  And on the farm of his son, Andr\u00e1s, the sea oregano, with its bright green leaves drooping widely, withstood the scorching drought. The only thing that amazed the reporter even more was how anyone could even think of expanding the oregano-growing area to over 50 hectares. This third-generation family farm is exemplary not only in its successful use of regenerative methods to combat the effects of climate change. It also carries out comprehensive ecological programs\u2014partly on its own\u2014to restore the resilience of its crops and ensure stable yields.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Compensation to 1,000 Hectares\u2014Investing in the Land, Not in Machinery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Szeredi family is modern today, regenerative principles<\/a> The roots of the Szeredi family farm date back to the early 1990s. According to Attila Szeredi\u2019s recollection, his father, Dr. Andr\u00e1s Szeredi Sr., founded the farm, and today his son, Andr\u00e1s, is the third-generation owner. The founder launched the business in 1992, during the land restitution period, and actively encouraged local collective farm leaders to take advantage of this rare opportunity, which arises only once in a generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He believed in his own professional competence and thought that if he had proven himself at Gabona Kutat\u00f3, he would also succeed in a market economy. He invested all their available funds in buying land, even though at that time, in the mid-1990s, many people did not believe in the value of land at all. This forward-thinking mindset also shaped the farm\u2019s subsequent development strategy. While other farms were buying shiny, modern John Deere or IH tractors, they relied on Russian and Czech workhorses\u2014the MTZs and Zetors. Attila recounts that it was hard for his late younger brother to accept that while his colleagues sat in air-conditioned cabs, they were still toiling away with outdated equipment, but their father was unyielding: he invested every profit they made back into the land. He always insisted that although land prices might seem high now, they would be much higher in a few years\u2014and time proved him right; prices have risen steadily over the past decades. The family\u2019s initial 10\u201320-hectare plot swelled to 300 hectares within a few years, and then an unexpected market shift brought about a huge leap in quality. In the Mak\u00f3 region, one of the local agricultural cooperatives fell heavily into debt and sold off part of its assets. The founder\u2019s father had cultivated strong professional and personal relationships with local leaders: he had previously supplied them regularly with high-quality seed genetics and varieties. Thus, the cooperative\u2019s unit in Kiszombor\u2014which was a neglected production facility\u2014ultimately found a new owner in them. Neither agricultural engineers nor outside investors dared to take on debt to invest in such a risky venture teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. However, the Szeredi family took over the farm, a water extraction facility, and the associated land leases through careful borrowing, immediately reaching a scale of 1,000 hectares. This massive growth and solid foundation enabled Andr\u00e1s to join an organization that was already stable but facing serious challenges. After graduating from agricultural college with a major in crop production and seed production, he also earned a degree in plant pathology through full-time study; he now works full-time on the family estate, continuing the family\u2019s professional legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Way Out of the Dead End: The Roots of Diversity and a Shift in Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Diversity is not a recent fad in the economy, but rather a necessity and strategy that has been present from the very beginning. The land acquisitions were underpinned by the cultivation of high-yielding aestivum and durum wheat seeds\u2014a venture stemming from the father\u2019s earlier network of contacts and linked to the grain research institute. These crops were extremely labor-intensive, requiring a great deal of manual selection and cleaning to remove foreign matter, but the substantial revenue generated by them ensured the farm\u2019s growth. In the early period, the crop mix presented an incredibly diverse picture: in addition to onion sets, red onions, and garlic, carrots, parsley, parsnips, cilantro, and spinach were also part of the mix. Later, they shifted from intensive vegetable cultivation to field crops, where traditional crops such as winter durum wheat, corn, sunflowers, and rapeseed dominated. During the era of intensive irrigated vegetable farming, however, they faced serious environmental problems. Continuous fall harvests and the trampling of waterlogged soils by heavy machinery led to massive waterlogging in the fields. When they abandoned these intensive crops, the classic waterlogging problems did indeed disappear, but the internal structure of the soil continued to deteriorate year after year, becoming compacted and clumped together. Attila explains in detail that it was futile to systematically leave all organic matter on the stubble fields. In their case, the straw, corn stalks, and harvest residues were never removed from the soil. Despite traditional practices such as crop rotation, medium-depth loosening, and repeated tillage, the soil structure did not improve. The heavy meadow clay soils and muddy loam areas surrounding the farmstead became stubbornly compacted every year. It was then that it became clear that traditional technology, based on mechanical interventions, was a dead end. The final push for change came from a professional meeting in 2017. A friend invited Attila to a two-day gathering of regenerative farmers, where growers already practicing no-till farming shared their experiences from the past year. It was telling of the state of openness in Hungarian agriculture at the time that, out of the roughly fifty farmers invited, Attila was the only one who attended the event. There, upon hearing about the practical results presented, the thought began to take root in his mind that there is a deep, inescapable logic to the regenerative approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switching to no-till without the stress of buying new equipment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many people believe that switching to a no-till system\u2014involving no plowing, minimal tillage, and direct seeding\u2014entails unaffordable machinery investments and the threat of immediate financial ruin. The example of the Szeredi farm refutes this fear. Their transition was a gradual, well-thought-out process. First, they simply stopped plowing; then, for spring crops, they initially tilled to a depth of 25 centimeters, later reducing it to just 15 centimeters, until they eventually reached minimum tillage and then full no-till technology, where the seeder places the seed directly into the undisturbed soil. When asked how much investment and financial strain this transition entailed, Attila gives a reassuring answer: converting their machinery fleet did not involve huge costs for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They simply set aside the medium-depth tillage implements and sold the plows and other soil-tillage implements that were no longer needed from the farm. The field cultivators and short-disc harrows that had previously been used for seedbed preparation suddenly became the primary tillage implements. They kept only a single subsoiler on the farm as a precaution, in case extraordinary intervention was needed somewhere in the system, and for contract work, since the local farmers they serve still require traditional tillage operations. Andr\u00e1s adds from a technical perspective that the most important step in the transition is the one-time, radical elimination of mechanical plow pan and compacted layers that have formed in the past, and the minimization of repeated tillage. This plow pan must be broken up before adopting the system, but afterward, this loosened soil condition must be strictly maintained. The key is to minimize soil compaction as much as possible and avoid disturbing the developing soil biology. The real investment isn\u2019t in the implements, but rather learning<\/a>, as well as follow-up reading and my own experiments, and the many setbacks I experienced during the learning process, which resulted in financial losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Corn Doesn't Whistle in a Drought<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most striking test of regenerative farming technology comes during extreme weather conditions. While on conventionally farmed, plowed fields the corn leaves curl up in the summer heat and atmospheric drought, \u2014that is, they \u201ecurl up\u201d\u2014to reduce evaporation, on the Szeredi farm\u2019s no-till fields, the plants\u2019 condition and balance remain visibly stable. Andr\u00e1s explains the biological basis for this. The secret lies in continuous soil cover and the integrity of the root zone. In the no-till system, there is a constant layer of living matter for more than 270 out of 365 days plant cover or a thick layer of mulch<\/a> It covers the ground. The flattened plant stems and debris left on the field absorb the rays of the scorching sun, drastically reduce the temperature of the soil surface, and prevent the evaporation of critically important moisture. This layer of mulch acts like a sponge: it retains even the morning dew and minimal precipitation as a dew trap, virtually returning it to the soil, while, thanks to the deep root systems that develop in undisturbed soil and the mycorrhizal fungal associations, corn and other crops are able to absorb orders of magnitude more water and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite\u2014or rather, precisely because of\u2014the use of no-till and reduced-input technology, yields are excellent. They are achieving exceptionally good results not only with mass-market crops but also with durum wheat, which demands premium quality. For example, they harvest 4\u20136 metric tons of durum wheat, and not infrequently 7\u20138 metric tons. Attila emphasizes that the regenerative system is a long-term investment that may initially involve a great deal of experimentation and temporary losses, but after a learning period, production becomes much more predictable. Yields stabilize and may even exceed those of conventional technology in the long run, while the cost of inputs (fertilizer, diesel) drops dramatically. This stability provides the foundation for producing reliably for fixed markets and long-term processing contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecological Solutions \u2013 From Voles to a 30-Meter-Wide Forest Strip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, moving away from tillage brings new challenges, to which the farm seeks ecological\u2014rather than chemical\u2014solutions. The biggest crop protection challenge of no-till farming is the presence of field voles. The drastic nationwide vole outbreak experienced in 2023 hit them hard as well, particularly in fields where winter cereals were planted after soybeans, since the rodents had already proliferated in the soybean crop before harvest. At the same time, damage remained less severe in fields planted after grain or sunflowers, and the population collapsed rapidly due to tularemia infection and natural inbreeding. To address the problem, they partnered with the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society. Since the association had not previously received similar requests from farmers, they were happy to support the initiative. The family covered the cost of materials, and the bird conservationists built the nesting boxes, which they then installed together in the fields. In the floodplain areas and along the canal banks, they installed nesting boxes for red-footed falcons, rollers, barn owls, and little owls; and, in a first for the country, they even created artificial kestrel roosts using hollowed-out acacia poles, which the birds of prey immediately claimed as their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although predators in the grassland ecosystem always lag behind the reproduction of voles, and are not capable on their own of completely eradicating a major outbreak, their presence is an indispensable mitigating factor. Another pillar of restoring biological balance is the systematic planting of field-protecting forest strips. The old mosaic landscape structure has almost completely disappeared from the Great Plain; there are no shrub belts for kilometers on end, which leaves the way open for wind and erosion. On the Szeredi farm, therefore, substantial, 30-meter-wide, multi-tiered windbreak forest strips have been established. The structure of the strips follows a pyramid pattern: they begin at the edges with grassland, followed by low shrubs, followed by wild fruit trees (which provide food and nesting sites), while fast-growing poplars and hardwood trees are located in the center of the strip. The tall poplars serve as excellent perches for buzzards, marsh harriers, short-toed eagles, and red kites migrating from Romania, from which they can see far into the no-till fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dialogue and the answer to the question \u201eWhat should we plant?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both Andr\u00e1s and Attila agree that a modern farmer cannot imagine himself to be an all-powerful god who knows everything. Ongoing consultation with professionals in related fields is crucial. \u201eWhen it comes to birds, we need to sit down with ornithologists; for forest strips, with foresters; for water management, with water resources experts and educators; and for the protection of pollinators, with the Beekeepers\u201d Association,\u201e \u2014they emphasize. Today\u2019s intensive agriculture forces bee colonies into a monodiet, which leads to the weakening of populations due to a lack of biodiversity. At the Szeredi farm, they strive to ensure a continuous supply of flowering, pollinator-friendly areas for insects by coordinating their crop rotation. Partly as a result of this, alongside corn, poppies, peas, sunflowers, and cereals, special crops such as oregano are also being grown. The latter is, in fact, almost unprecedented: next year, it will be grown on well over 50 hectares, compared to the current 25. \u201dWe always grow crops for a fixed market, based on prior agreements. There\u2019s a buyer for the oregano, too,\u201d said Attila. His words also make it clear that with sufficient care, research, and an open mind, there is always an answer to the question, \u201cWhat should we grow to be profitable?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This openness also helps bridge the communication gaps plaguing the domestic agricultural sector, whether they involve conflicts arising from beekeepers\u2019 illegal settlement or rivalry with hunting clubs. Attila himself is a member of the local hunting club, so protecting the cornfields with electric fences is a joint project between them and the hunters, with shared funding, since preventing wildlife damage is in the fundamental interest of both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future is in safe hands: Andr\u00e1s will continue to focus on regenerative agriculture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our report also outlines the challenges of the future. Establishing and maintaining such an in-depth ecological system requires either owning the land or maintaining an extremely close, trusting relationship with the landowners. In a jointly leased property with thirty owners, no one is going to plant a 30-meter-wide forest strip. Attila notes with regret that today\u2019s bureaucratic, indirect land lease payment system depersonalizes these relationships. Yet in the past, visiting and listening to the elderly landowners laid the foundation for the mutual trust necessary for long-term sustainability. Attila, 60, is reassured that the farm has a secure future, because the next generation\u2014in the person of his son, Andr\u00e1s\u2014is already by his side. Andr\u00e1s faces a monumental task: following soil restoration, the next step is to develop an innovative, wetland ecosystem and a complex water management structure within the no-till fields\u2014one that ensures a continuous water supply not only for crops but also for soil biology, bacteria, and fungi, even during summer heat waves of 40\u201350 degrees. After all, the ultimate goal is not merely to chase yields by the metric ton, but to produce food ingredients of outstanding nutritional quality that are healthy and pure for the general public.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
